“Red Flag. Two words that can make or break an air force fighter pilot.”
—from Chapter One
Inside the gates of Nellis Air Force Base just outside of glitzy Las Vegas, NV, exists an environment where the best of the best fighter pilots practice their trade in what has become the most advanced air combat training in the entire world. This is the home of Red Flag.
It is here that aircraft and crews from the U.S. Air Force and from its allies around the world take part in two weeks of training that is as intense and demanding as that of actual combat.
Red Flag: Air Combat for the 21st Century takes readers behind the scenes of the biggest, most complex, high-tech military exercise conducted anywhere in the world. From author and aviation photographer Tyson Rininger, this lavishly illustrated book offers a complete history and an unprecedented insider’s view of the fully integrated, war-conditions exercise that uses the largest combat range on the planet—it’s the size of Connecticut—and involves every kind of military aircraft and asset, from fighters, tankers, and bombers to helicopters, satellites, and unmanned aircraft.
With dynamic photos, detailed aircraft specifications, and firsthand description, the book also gives readers a close-up look at the modern and upgraded version of Red Flag—Joint Red Flag, an all-new exercise integrating live and virtual elements in a seamless campaign that challenges war-fighters and tests command and control procedures, processes, and architecture.

Reviews of Red Flag
“Tyson Rininger has produced a glossy, 125-page book filled with history, insights and spectacular photos outlining the history and mission of Nellis AFB outside Las Vegas … a lavishly illustrated book offering a complete history and an unprecedented insider’s view of the fully integrated, war-conditions exercise.”
—Pacific Flyer
“The promo material sent with this book says quite simply ‘Strap in tight, light it up, and take to the skies. You’re training at Red Flag!’ It’s correct … This lavishly illustrated work takes you behind the scenes of the largest, most complex high-tech military exercise conducted anywhere in the world … ‘Red Flag’ are two words that can make or break an Air Force pilot. Luckily for you, reading this book will be the closest you’ll ever come to flying this arduous exercise, but without the risk of losing your airplane or career!”
—Wings & Airpower
“In this well-illustrated volume, the author tells the story of the USAF’s Red Flag exercises centered on Nellis AFB and held over the vast Nellis Range Complex. The text gives a reasonable background to the organization of the complex … the photos are all in color, punchy and well-produced … Good subject, good aircraft, good photographer.”
—Combat Aircraft
“While there is plenty of information in the book about Red Flag, a large number of pages are given over to the aircraft taking part ... It is clear that although Red Flag has its origins in the Cold War, it is as relevant today as it ever was – a point on which the author leaves us in no doubt.”
